I find that often my kick drum is WAY too loud compared to my mix. When I turn the volume of the kick down it doesn't punch through correctly. I'm not sure if it's just a matter of EQ / compression because I've seen videos of producers being able to balance everything from the get-go without any EQ / Compression.
I've heard that it's important to have all of your samples peaking at a certain DB on your main master meter. So lets say I start with -6db on the kick ... Would I want to make sure all the other elements are hitting -6db as well ? Then if different samples need adjusting you go from there.
