I've tried a handful of times to get inspired working with Ableton Live and any ideas I have are more or less screwed up by trying to get music played through or worked with. I'd like to take a shot at going hardware-only, at least for now. I don't need anything too advanced.
I'm looking at groovebox-style standalone sequencer workstations like the Roland MC 303 or 505, Yamaha RM1x, and Electribe EMX-1. Basically I'd like to have sorta-piano keys to put in notes, a sequencer, arpeggiator, a bunch of different built-in instruments for drums, bass/rhythm, etc., maybe a sampler but to me right now that's not required. ADSR controls of some sort, a basic LFO, and basic effects should be fine for my needs right now.
I'll be using Audio-Technica ATH-M50s headphones but if I get serious, I'll go in for a basic mixer and studio monitors.
I'd like to absolutely max out at $250-$300ish for the groovebox or equivalent. I'm open to ideas/suggestions/thoughts. I'm located in the NY/NJ metro area if that changes things around.
Thus far, my list includes (along with some that are probably out of my budget but worth keeping an eye out for price drops on secondhand marketplaces):
- Roland MC 303
- Roland MC 505
- Yamaha RM1x
- Yamaha RS7000
- Korg Electribe EMX-1
- Korg Electribe EMS-1
- Korg Volca Keys/Beats/Bass
Am I missing anything?
