Hey /r/edmproduction, I recently posted to /r/flstudio, but figured I would see if anyone here could help me as well.
Original post: I posted previously about an issue with my CPU usage in FL Studio, and it’s occurring again. If anyone can help me troubleshoot this issue, I would really, really appreciate it. This post is on the long side, so thank you to anyone who reads it. Anyways, on to the problem.
Background: I recently started working on a new project. So far it contains approximately: 11 synths (massive, sylenth, nexus), 27 wav samples, 1 mp3 sample (5,648KB, vocals). Current project size is 45,004KB. The project was playing perfectly the first night I worked on it. Today, I went to work on the project again, and that’s when the issues started.
Problem: When opening the project, there were no issues. Playback sounded great. However, after having the program open for about 15 minutes, the CPU usage meter in the toolbar spiked up to ~90% when playing, and was running at ~30% just leaving the project open, even when not working on anything. So, I restart FL Studio, and reopen my project. Now it is idling at around 11% usage, and when I press play it only spikes up to 15%. Playback sounds great, no glitches or latency issues at all. It seems to be working perfectly. I decide to play through the project again, and by the 3rd playback, it’s now idling at ~27%, and playback is incredibly glitchy, with CPU usage ranging from 81-97%.
My current settings: FL Studio 11 Producer Edition; Buffer length: 5280smp (120ms); Offset: 0% Current project: 45,004 KB Computer: Intel Xeon CPU E3-1230 v3 @ 3.30GHz, Ram: 16.0 GB, 64-bit Operating System (Windows 8.1), x64- based processor. OS and FL Studio are both installed on the same 250GB Samsung SSD, while all sample files and plugins are installed on the same 2TB HDD. I’m also using an M-Audio M-Track Two-Channel USB Audio/MIDI Interface that has never caused any issues before. From what I can see on Image-Line’s FL Studio Spec. Requirements Website my computer seems to be more than enough to run the program.
To troubleshoot this issue, I raised the buffer length, and increased the offset. By increasing the buffer length to 7988smp (182ms,) and Offset to 30%, I’m able to keep the CPU usage to around 85%, and playback sounds alright. Smaller adjustments to buffer length and offset did not fix the problem. The issue with this is that now it is impossible to add any new elements to the song, as everything is so lagged that I cannot tell what the adjustments I’m making sound like. I also set every sample to “keep on disk,” with the hopes that CPU usage would be lowered; this did not have any noticeable impact.
I notice that this project is considerably larger than some other projects I’ve worked on. Could this be the issue? If so, what can I do to bring the project size down to a manageable size? If it is because the vocal MP3 is too large of a file, is there anything I can do to compress the file into a smaller format, without sacrificing quality? If project or file size is not the issue, I’m at a loss. Again, any help is seriously appreciated!
