It seems like my issues with tackling a mix that I can be proud of is opposite many people around here and on other sites, even to the point that I can't find very good resources to help me out.
While many people fight to put space and tight low end in their mixes as well as a sense of clarity, I feel that the clarity in my mixes is extremely sharp and biting. It actually sounds okay on my monitors, however when I A/B it to other mixes, the transients are extremely sharp and it seems like there's a whole load of crisp high end that just doesnt exist in professional mixes. I really want my mixes to sound more smooth like mainstream dance music, without losing all of the transients.
First of all, yes I have room control on my monitors, yes I'm in a treated room. I've tried compression with low attacks and limiting to fix the issue and sometimes it even seems to make it worse. when my instinct is to cut the high end on every single EQ on every channel in my mix, it makes me wonder if professional engineers really are just removing the high end out of everything as well.
Am I crazy? Am I using compressors wrong to tame transients? (short attack) Do sample packs really have exclusively samples full of out-of-control high end? I must be missing something because I even hear noob mixes doing so many things badly that have a smoothness that my mixes don't possess, and I've been doing this for quite a long time.
TL:DR, my mixes are too clear, present and transients are too sharp even when trying to tame them. Things supposed to help sometimes feel to make it worse and cutting the high end so aggressively feels unusual compared to everything i see about mixing online. Any advice?
