One piece of advice I hear a lot is to use the Haas effect. While this does work, it makes it more difficult to mix as the delay effect actually ends up boosting the stereo volume while lowering the mono volume.
So I'm particularly interested in widening effects (I hear Stereoizer is a good plugin, but it's costly) that will work on synth lead or bass. Also am curious if iZotope Ozone's "stereo imager" could work for this purpose.
