I've been a Mac user since 2011. I'll need a new computer eventually, and I refuse to buy one of the new MBPs or go the Hackintosh route. I've been considering building a custom mega-desktop just for production.
I remember Windows having some distinct shortcomings for production (lag with audio and MIDI, which could be fixed with Asio4all which meant you could only have audio playing from your DAW, drivers, etc). Has any of this improved? I don't want to sink a bunch of money into a computer and then regret it, but I also just flat out refuse to play $1500 for an under-spec'd laptop.
Thanks!
[Edit] I also remember that if I opened Ableton without having my MIDI controller plugged in already, I'd have to shut Ableton down, plug in my controller, and then open Ableton again to get it to recognize the controller. Surely this has changed?
