The past years have changed how artists make money on music. It's gotten way harder to actually make money off your music since it is so easy to get it all for free. Music, digitally speaking, seems to be worthless while merchandise and playing shows has become the way to make any income. For the upcoming musician my theory has been put out music free and invest in some worthwhile merch (maybe a limited run of vinyl, shirts, art, posters, stickers... collectibles) and save your money on promotion and boosts online.
What I'm finding though is that I put my music for free/donation (not expecting any donations) and lo and behold, people actually still are willing to pay for [spoiler alert] QUALITY music. I say save the money buying CDs, don't make ur music hard to access and share, and rely on growing your fanbase.
1) Does anyone else agree/disagree?
2) For anyone experienced in online promo/marketing services, what is the best investment you've made to get your music out there?
