Does a sustain pedal have to be plugged into the MIDI keyboard, or can I plug it directly into my PC?

Hi. I have a small portable MIDI keyboard that does not have a port to plug in a sustain pedal. I was wondering if it is possible to plug the sustain pedal and MIDI keyboard into my PC separately and get them to work together?

I use Ableton Live 9. Any advice appreciated. Thanks!
