The term "remix" makes it sound derivative, like it's worth less than a wholly original piece. I think that instead of a remix, it should be considered generous sampling. Negativland's amazing album Helter Stupid isn't considered a remix of news cuts, it's an original work that happens to sample news cuts (a lot).
A "remix" will always be in comparison to the remixed, a sample heavy piece is judged on it's own right.
