I'm 27 with zero musical background other than that of a listener. Around the time I was 20 or so I started regretting never having learnt, but I told myself that it was too late. That was pretty stupid of me so now I'm biting the bullet.
I got Reaper, a cheap Akai MPK Mini and even a microphone that I could feasibly muse. Even with zero musical background I've been having some fun just exploring the DAW. For now it's mostly been importing midi files from the internet and putting neat effects on them while I work through Reaper's tutorial videos.
After that I'll probably have to learn some actual music theory, and bite the bullet on what kind of music I want to make... Problem is I actually like a whole bunch of genres (metal, edm, synthwave, electroswing, ...)
So I guess my questions to you guys are the following:
1) Do you have any good (free) resources for me to learn music theory? Doesn't have to be video, I don't mind books.
2) How do you decide what kind of music to make (or at least start with), if you're into all kinds?
3) I'm also still kind of stuck between going 100% DAW or straight up learning an instrument, probably digital piano. How do you decide on that?
I fully realize there probably aren't any set-in-stone answers, but these are some things I'm struggling internally with. It's just such a huge mountain to climb and I'm not sure how to best secure my footing.
