This month's fictitious genre: Psytek
Description
Following on the spirit of last month's Fictitious Genre Competition, this month's genre is Psytek. Psytek brings together psytrance and techno, two distinctly underground genres.
Psytrance, or psychedelic trance, is a subgenre of trance that grew out of the goa trance movement. There's a distinct, energetic sound characterized frequently by the use of triplet bass stabs in between kicks, and is typically between 140bpm and 160bpm. Techno, specifically for this competition, minimal/Berlin techno, Detroit Techno, or melodic techno, is characterized by minimal-yet-distinct elements, heavily quantized four-on-the-floor drum patterns, a kick every quarter note, and grinding groove-heavy basslines between 110bpm and 126bpm.
Superficially, while they may seem like long-lost cousins, they actually share a lot more in common under the hood. Both subgenres have a "progressive" style (not to be confused with progressive house or trueprog), that adds or removes layers typically every four to eight bars. As a result, they're usually slower to "build", with tracks in both psytrance and techno typically five to eight minutes long. To drive listeners to carry on listening, a strong, groovy bassline is required for both, and usually takes center stage. Analog gear is commonplace, and synths such as the Roland TB-303, Juno, and SH-101 have found homes among the pioneers in the two genres.
As traditionally underground genres, both psytrance and techno have a grittier, dirty feel that's more at home in an illegal warehouse rave than on a festival stage, particularly since techno found its roots in Detroit and a second home in Berlin. Psytek should be distinctly different from both hard techno and slow psytrance. Psytek should capture the fundamental groove, sound, and feel that defines psytrance and techno, and the challenge here will be in distilling both genres down to "what makes psytrance psytrance" and "what makes minimal/Berlin/Detroit/melodic techno techno".
