I have a few hardware synthesizers that I use for my trance production. My studio is digital, but I want to use my hardware, too. I found it difficult to work around latency in my DAW (Logic Pro X in particular) and tried multiple approaches:
- Having two tracks: A MIDI track for an external instrument and an audio track for the actual audio looped back through an audio-interface
- A single track: Software instrument track using the external plugin to route MIDI in/out and record the audio
The first one works currently the best for me although it brings some limitations in the sense that I need to record all audio once I'm happy with the MIDI. Dealing with recorded audio does not allow tweaking controls (filters, LFO, …) in real time.
The second one is okay, but it requires a lot of CPU power which comes again for the price of latency. I can't easily freeze the audio (pre-record with applied effects) to reduce CPU usage.
I wondered whether there are other approaches. Happy to learn from you!
