Imagine you download a "free sample pack", could a sample company sue you and claim they were free to download but not royalty free? Also, what is the worst case that could happen if you used a sample that isn't royalty free? Would you need to pay them a flat fee or just a part of the income you get from selling the song? And if you released the song for free, would you be invulnerable?
