I'm a production newbie right now, and I'll have to get through the mixing step at some point. Once that will be done, I know about the mastering step. I see people talking about mastering by oneself and other talking about sending tracks to mastering engineers.
I've noticed multiple rates when it comes to mastering services. From like $70 to even around $15 per track. I don't think I have the best equipment for mastering. I mean, I use HiFiMAN Edition S headphones connected to a FiiO E17K DAC, and my room sure isn't acoustically treated for using speaker monitors. I can't hear the difference between 320kbps MP3s and FLACs with that stuff (but can tell a difference between 128kbps and 320kbps for instance).
If I want my tracks to sound at their best for at least showing them to friends and family (and perhaps drop them on SoundCloud just like that without advertising), and not yet for release through labels, do you think it's worth going through the mastering service at around $15, or should I rather try mastering by myself?
