I have this weird issue where I find 'unmixed' and noticeable-y clipping output sounding better than carefully managed mix with tamed transients. I am aware of the fact that higher volume creates illusion of better mix but I just find that clipping output is more present or in-your-face for the lack of better word. Now, obviously I suck at mixing but knowing how much effort goes into the mixing process (also my equipment sucks for this, I have no room treatment and generally rely on mixing on good headphones and then checking overall mix back on monitors) and weighing it against the results I get from it I just find that it is not worth it.
I am also aware that industry standards tell us to never 'run red' because it kind of squashes the original audio in a bad way but on the other hand there is a saying - "if it sounds good it is probably good". And I do find clipping audio sounding better in general.
I just wanted to hear your opinion on the matter. Is it ok to 'run red' and mix that way or one has to follow industry standards?
