So many pro tracks that I've analyzed the drops of have a very consistent sub bass while looking through a spectral analyzer. That is, it isn't jumping up and down quickly and stays a very even level throughout. In my own mastering of tracks, I can get the RMS I want (usually settle at -9), but never is my sub consistent like the pros. The RMS level indicator on their tracks is a long unchanging line (looking through Pro-C) while mine is bouncing up and down with the kick and bass (my sub is much more dynamic). You'd think the answer is using multi-band compression on the sub to get it more consistent, but I never can get it as consistent as pros. Just for fun and experimentation, I went crazy and started slamming it with 10:1, up to 100:1 ratios with varying amounts of gain reduction and different attack/release settings and STILL after the makeup gain, it wasn't consistent. I even tried changing my sample choices to heavy big room kicks. Still didn't work. The only way I could get a little close was by using a sustained sub sine wave that hit on every beat with the kick (so pretty much constant sub). Solo-ing the sub of pro tracks, I hear that they're definitely not having a constant sub line like what I had to do to achieve consistency. I'm so confused and feel like theres some secret I don't know! Please someone shed some wisdom on how they're doing this. Please don't just say stuff like, "dynamics are good" or "it's not about getting the loudest song".
