I started with Garage Band on my Mac, but I want to upgrade to something different. I’m looking for a music software that meets the following needs.
-
Has a Piano Roll. If you don’t know what this is, it’s a visual representation of notes placed in the form of little horizontal bars. The Piano Roll allows you place notes manually. This is absolutely necessary for me, I can’t write or read music, so this would be my only way of composing.
-
Can create/manipulate synthesizers to a very high degree of detail. I want full manipulation over the sound.
-
Is great for electronic music production. For instance, I like Oneohtrix Point Never, Kid A and Thom Yorke’s stuff in general, Tim Hecker, melt-banana, Death Grips, Flying Lotus, James Blake, and though he’s not electronic, Nujabes.
-
Is compatible with a high-quality orchestral sample library. I want to be able to make really elaborate string articulations. If you guys could recommend me an orchestral library to download/purchase too, that would be nice. I also wanted to ask about good drum sample packs too.
-
Is capable of tempo shifts and pitch bend. I want to be able to program tempo shifts into the song. So say, for instance, I want to be able to start at 100 bpm and then be able to speed the song up to 120, then back down again. It would also be nice if the program could match tempos of two different pieces.
-
Has a reverse sound effect, or is capable of reversing material written.
-
Is capable of using microtones. This isn’t absolutely essential to me, but it would be great. Let me know if the software you recommended is capable of this.
