I've got a topic that I would like to ask you all about, that touches into both sound design and arrangement.
During my time with music production, I've developed a journeyman's understanding of how to design and layer sounds for multiple simultaneous parts. I've realized that all of my different parts tend to be very 'busy,' in that, while the part is playing, it is almost always producing sound. While I've still managed to make tracks that I am happy with despite this simplistic form of arrangement (example of what I'm talking about), I want to expand my skills to more advanced possibilities. Many artists I admire make heavy use of 'call and response.' Complextro and many dubstep examples take this to an extreme, with the 'melody' comprised of many different sounds that cut back and forth. I'm sure you know what I'm talking about, but here's a master at work just in case.
So I've looked into this and tried my hand.... And I can never get it to sound like anything more than random sounds playing. There is no cohesion.
So do you have any tips for how to design and arrange sounds to create that cohesion that I am lacking?
