I've been learning music production for almost two years, but very very very VERY casually. I have more knowledge about mixing and music making than actual hands on experience (spent a lot of my commute time reading and what not)
Here's my issue and I'm wondering how to tackle it based on what you guys find works best.
Basically, some tunes I work on i'll be working on for MONTHS. I'll start a project and work on it usually about 1-2 hours 2-3 times a week. Occasionally I don't get much done because it takes me a bit to get into the zone, and also because I still suck ass basically so i'm slow at pulling through.
The problem with this is, I lose interest in the track. I'm a very feel based "artist" so when I get a wind of inspiration for a genre of music or just a beat, I start with that. But imagine that you're now 2 months later and your track is basically like 25 seconds, you're losing inspiration or just don't know what to do with it anymore. It also starts to sound less good, maybe your ears got fatigued and thus you feel uninspired with what you have going.
I know there's no consensus, but what do you guys usually do? Do you think it's better that I at least force myself to complete projects, should I just give myself deadlines and finish a song even tho it's coming out hella bad or is it okay to just end up with like 100 unfinished shelved projects? At least take what I learned from each one and apply it to the next, thus eventually meaning (that's my assumption) that one day i'll be able to lay down a full beat faster and before I get jaded by the project i'm working on. I feel like I should't be on one project for 6 months(this actually happened), for a beat that sounds like the toys you get in cereal boxes aka just bad
Sometimes it's hard to continue cause you see the subpar quality of your tunes and don't know what to do with it, others it's just that I lost my inspiration for it and feel for something else, so the progress becomes slow or uninspired. I have limited time, so optimizing is important to make meaningful progress rather than just wasting time when I get into my DAW
What's your take on this?
