I understand the concept of using reference tracks as I produce to compare the perceived volume, layers & elements and so on but honestly when I compare to my own production I just am struggling to get it to even be close to the professionally produced track (I understand some mastering could help, but i am referring to how thin my song is). I understand that it may be not having enough layers to occupy the spectrum fully hence the less full sound. What are some things you look for when using reference tracks?? And do you compare levels as you produce or do i reference in the mixing and mastering stage?
