I want to play an instrument for fun a few times a week, and one day play at family barbeques and teach my children to play as a way to bond. Though I like pop music the most, I also enjoy celtic music and folk songs. Generally, I'd describe my music preferences as feminine and/or narrative in nature. I really enjoyed playing the recorder in elementary school, and the flute in middle school, but didn't continue after cross country moves in both instances that resulted in the return of both instruments.
I had no trouble reading music and enjoyed learning independently through books. I think I'd want whatever instrument I play to be portable enough to fit in my large purse but affordable enough so that, if I were to lose it or damage it when I'm out, it won't be a bother to replace.
What instrument would you suggest me picking up, and how should I go about learning it?
