Hey guys, I'm a music producer/beat maker from California, and I'd like to start working on some remixes to popular songs, but I want to know if you guys can help me with a few questions I have regarding how to go about doing so properly. I've read up a lot online about how to legally remix a song but I haven't exactly been able to find a straight up/concise answer as to how to do so...
Here are my questions:
1) When DJ's/Producers, like Skrillex for example, release a remix to a famous song, do they ask permission from the artist/label that owns the masters of the recordings first? Or do they just make it and put it out? Also, where do they get the stems for these songs? The owners?
2) Now, what about all the countless producers on Soundcloud who have released remixes? Obviously I doubt most of these people have gotten permission, but let's say someone like me wants to make a remix and release it on Soundcloud, hoping that Soundcloud doesn't take it down 😒, do I need to get permission first? Even if it's for non-profit (free download)?
From what I've researched so far, apparently if you did release a remix without permission from the owners, technically speaking, they COULD file a lawsuit against you (especially if that song blows up), but I keep reading that it wouldn't be worth it to the label to do so if you're not making money from it. How true is that?
I pretty much just want to know any information you guys have pertaining to making and releasing remixes, so if you guys have any advice/tips/knowledge and/or elaborations on this topic, I'd really appreciate it if you guys could educate me :]
Thanks in advance! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
