I was a music education major, classically trained on piano. I bought Ableton and I have a Korg M50. I'm finally at the point now where I can think up a sweet beat and record it and "EQ" and "master" it. My thing is, I know that it wouldn't be ready to send to a label.
I've gotten this far basically by drawing on my music education and YouTube videos on ableton how to. Of course there's the manual but I'm doubting Deadmau5 just read his manual and got to be where he is.
Like, I've taken so many music theory and history courses, but nobody teaches you about osscilators and filters. I just kinda stumbled upon side chaining a track to the kick with a gate, and then side chain compressing it to an invisible quarter note pattern. I thought I was brilliant until I noticed the exact effect in a song.
How can I get to professional level? It can't just be "watch more YouTube videos". Any suggestions? It seems daunting.
