I was producing a song with a reference track to have the idea of the song structure and essentially changing the elements so it would not be identical to the reference track as a learning experience to get the structure in my head but when I compare the levels, the reference track is definitely more phat than mine even when I have equally same amount of layers. I understand professional songs are mastered and that might be why but honestly the last mix down before master should not sound that different am I right???
I know it's very vague but what are some tips to make the song phat other than mastering??
Oh and the reference track I'm referring to is Afrojack's System and the intro until buildup part.
