Recording an entire practice session can be overwhelming. A 20-second recording is often enough to answer one useful question.
Pick a short phrase you are already working on and decide what to listen for before pressing record: steady beat, clear rests, even note length, or whether the melody is audible over the accompaniment. Play it once and listen back without judging the whole performance. Write down one observation in plain words, such as “the third rest was shorter” or “the second chord cut off early.” Then play the phrase again with only that one change in mind.
Keep both clips for the week. Comparing them makes small progress audible, especially when daily practice feels repetitive. Children can choose the listening target too; that gives them a job other than waiting for an adult to say whether it was good. If the recording raises a technique question, bring the two clips to the teacher rather than guessing at a physical fix.
