I have a pair of JBL LSR308s and mx50 headphones. Whenever I go to mix a track, I always have a hard time being able to hear and level low frequency sounds. I can hear the low frequencies obviously, but not well enough to be able to perfect them during a mixdown. So I'll typically finish a mix as much as possible, and then I have to go out in my car for a few hours to finalize the mix and focus on the low end using a reference track. When I do this, I'll notice overlapping sub frequencies that I couldn't hear using my headphones or monitors. It really helps me to be able to "feel" how loud the sub is and level it that way.
I'm pretty sure I have relatively common headphones and monitors. It's always confused me how people are able to mix their low end so confidently without having a sub or some way to really hear and feel the low frequencies, especially using only headphones. It almost seems impossible to me to mix properly using only my headphones. I'd rather not have to go out to my car every time I want to mix and use the unbalanced speakers and rely on a reference track, but at the moment I feel like I have to in order to ensure my low end is tight and properly leveled.
Any advice or thoughts?
