To make the kick stand out in my mix, I sidechained the bass and subbass to it and dropped the threshold+ratio. The problem is that a sort of 'whomp' of low frequencies floods into the mix after the kick which I don't like. Here's what I've tried:
-
I've tried shortening the release, but this makes a sort of muddy/ scratchy effect when the sub bass comes it.
-
I've tried elongating the release, but then it's just too quiet.
-
I've tried minimizing how much I change the threshold and ratio, making sure they effect the volume of the low frequencies as little as possible when the kick comes in, but this either ruins the duck the kick drum or results in the 'whomp' problem.
-
I can't increase the attack on the synths I'm using because the song is syncopated. If the synth is already playing when the kick hits, delay on attack won't help.
-
I've tried reducing the overall sound of the bass and subbass synths, but it just doesn't sound good in the mix because the mix loses its range.
I feel like this is probably an easily fixable problem but I'm not sure what to do. Any ideas?
