Kind of a vent but more a honest, serious question and I really hope to hear from your experiences because something in my life/work needs to change. Yesterday.
I work in music production and am generally incredibly giving - going above and beyond for my clients, helping smaller businesses out and not even in music, even helping out friends startups with marketing and other random things because I have experience and am generally a nice person and a good friend and want them to succeed.
But more and more I ask myself why the f* do I do this? They hardly ever return the favor and I don't see the favors being returned in other ways (cashing in good karma). More and more I just feel used and frustrated: I keep having the capabilities to help others (and do find a measure of joy from it), but why can't others do the same for me?
I've definitely learned to say no over the years and I really don't just bend over backwards for everyone all the time, but it feels like years of good karma just doesn't filter back to me in my work life (my personal and love life is great and I am grateful for that, but my career really needs a lift)...
So what am I really asking here? Producers - in your experience have your acts of kindness ever filtered into your production work? Thanks for any genuine, serious answers. I really don't know what to do and whether there is any value anymore in me just being 'nice' and 'kind'. 'Thanks you's' get me nowhere when what I really need are genuine referrals and bigger opportunities in my work.
TL;DR Can you recall times where you've helped others and noticed yourself reaping rewards in your professional music life because of it?
