Hi everyone,
I'm looking to improve my songwriting knowledge. I was thinking a good way to do this would be to study songs I love.
I want to analyze a song by basically writing the song on Paper and mapping out its parts. The was thinking of doing this on two levels
-
Assigning a variable (x, y, z, etc.) to each different block of the song's ARRANGEMENT. So a basic trap song would start with an intro (x), a build (y), a drop (z)...so on paper I would write out a song to be X, Y, Z, A, Y, Z, ... and so on
-
Assigning a different variable (1, 2, 3, etc.) to different INSTRUMENTS/SOUNDS in the song. So the intro (x) would consist of a snare (1) white noise (2) a bass (3), a hi hat (1.1) a different hi hat (1.2) etc... It's my hope through this that I can help better understand how artists are able to make their songs sound so fresh and unique.
I like the idea of using variables like this so I can easily compare songs of the same genre and see how they differ/compare
Anyone have any thoughts on this? It seems like a really good way for me to expand the depth of my music writing knowledge...but I don't want to start working on a big project like this unless the scope of it is clear and I know I'm doing it the right way.
Anyone have any personal experience with doing something like this? Or know of any resources that you can point me in the direction of?
THANK YOU IF YOU READ THIS and I hope you can help!
