I've been tweaking and restarting and tweaking this thing for too long. It's at the point where I'm ready to toss it. I feel like I have my levels right. I've eq'd unnecessary frequencies. I've gain staged at each new plugin to make sure my levels stayed the same. Everything is compressed gently. My pans are panned.
However, when the volume is raised, even a little bit...it turns into straight doo doo butter chunky.
Info for anyone who wants to respond. My room is decently calibrated. I have nice headphones as well. I A/B/C/D between monitors, a portable, headphones and a hi-fi speaker. At low volumes during mixing, it sounds fine to me. Then again, I'm still an amateur.
I feel like I've been doing everything right so far (I got books on mixing strewn all over the place) but I just can not for the life of me achieve a nice balance that will allow me to head into mastering.
Final note: I will not pay someone else to do it. My goal is to learn how to mix, at least to an acceptable level.
Anyway, check the mix in the dropbox. It's just a 30 second loop from the loudest part of the song. I'm open to any and all considerations :)
