I'm very familiar with the pop/folk structure of verses, choruses, and bridges, but I've recently begun dabbling in EDM (specifically electronic covers of classic video game songs) and it's proven a challenge (like all things worth doing in life).
When I listen to my own tunes, they sound... anemic. As far as I can tell, I've got all the elements. A tuned kick, sub-bass, bass, a lead, maybe some keys here and there... but it still all sounds thin and amateurish.
I know there are little nuanced "secrets" (not really) that come from trial and error (sidechaining white noise, effects, transitions, risers, etc.) and I'm totally clueless in that realm.
I also have no concept of arrangement for EDM tunes. Where does the drop go? How many drops? How do EDM producers visualize the end product and "sketch out" a demo?
I have a few questions for the experienced among you, if you would be so kind to answer: - On the topic above, how do you begin to visualize a song and structure it? Do you say, "I want the drop here, and four bars of a build-up here, the drums to drop out here." or just begin producing and see where the inspiration takes you? - What elements typically dictate the structure of your tunes? Is there a specific element you start with and build off of? - What are some tips for making your tunes more "full" and less "thin" (probably a loaded question...)?
Thank you for obliging this clueless acoustic musician. :)
