I'm looking for a serious collaborator, someone I can build my music career with, and so am wondering what are the elements of a successful collaboration. I've tried doing collabs in the past but they always fell through, either because our musical visions weren't aligned, or because one person did all the work while the other didn't add anything, or because of other commitments one party simply stopped showing up.
So I'm wondering, for successful collaborators out there - how do you do it? What does your partner add to your production, and vice versa? Does one person create the melody/harmony while another focuses on percussion and fx? Furthermore, how do you work out splitting distribution/copyright/royalties?
And what do you think is the minimum requirements for a successful partnership? Having the same DAW and plugins? Having similar hours available to produce music? Being located in the same area?
