This year is the first time I have made any money off of producing and it was via releasing sample packs with sample labels. My only issue is I have at this point only worked with 1 small label and 1 tiny label and I feel as if both are kind of fucking me around. 1 of them never pays royalties on time and has been up to 2 months late. The second label wants to work off of a one time payment contract yet when I tell him if he needs more edits that will cost more money he says he really just wants to focus on the quality of the pack... which is a bit of a non answer. I didn't sign a contract with him so I really can't point to a line and say there's the point where edits cost money.
I know I can't afford to open a civil court case every time a label is late with there payments so does anyone have any advice on how to prevent and repair shitty business relationships?
TLDR: As an artist how can I keep from getting fucked over by a Label/Freelance Contractor/Manager/Etc.
Thanks!
