Hello all, I'm looking for some advice on getting into music and choosing an instrument.
For some background - I've recently made some changes for personal growth, one of them being quitting video games. I've now been searching for new hobbies to invest my time that involve skill, something to show for my efforts, etc. which has led me to playing an instrument. I really know next to nothing about music and have only played handbells and the saxophone for a year each in middle school.
For my musical taste, I'm not a huge fan of classic rock, jazz, or country. My favorite types of music are metal/new alternative rock such as Breaking Benjamin, Red, with guitar like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EKZhnHkhIY (I understand I may never be able to play guitar to the extent it is in a lot of those songs I list). My other favorite type of music contains a lot of cello, viola/violin, and piano and somewhat thoughtful/melancholy. I'm a big fan of old celtic/fantasy music with sounds like these https://youtu.be/jdqcB_lKS1A?t=142 or https://youtu.be/qnf8vATuWVY?t=20
With this is mind, I would really appreciate some advice on choosing an instrument. I would also love to hear recommendations with maybe links to sounds so I can see for myself. I was thinking guitar at first as it's one of the most popular but I don't loveee the sound of acoustic guitar like i do a Cello or Viola I think. I may be wrong as I still am not sure what sounds each instrument is capable of producing. And I know Cello and Viola are more difficult so please help me weigh out these options! Thanks
