Hey guys so I'm just looking for some advice as someone who is completely new to playing an instrument, like barely touched an instrument in my life new. Lately I've been looking for new things to try, sort of looking for a hobby, maybe a passion, something I can learn and work on. I know learning an instrument is great as something to learn and also can be very rewarding, and I've been pretty excited to just give it a go. Because I have no experience I can't say how involved I'm looking to get with it, it really depends how much I end up enjoying it, if at all. I'm currently 23 years old and if I really enjoy it I could spend 1-2 hours most days practicing, take some lessons and spend some money on an instrument.
The main point I'm looking for advice on is the instrument itself. I spent a few hours looking into all types of instruments, knowing that the ones people always suggest like guitar, piano and drums weren't the ones I was particularly interested in. I was more interested in brass and woodwind instruments, which I actually have zero experience with. In particular the oboe was the one that caught my eye, however after more research I found out how difficult it would be. From what I read it seemed like it would take some time to even be able to play basic beginner music with the oboe, and have been told by people it is not a hobby instrument. I don't want to get bored of it so quick and it make me lose the desire to play an instrument. Also I know that I won't be able to truly see if I enjoy the instrument until I make some progress, so trying them all isn't really an option. So basically is the oboe even worth trying at this point? Will other instruments be easier to reach a decent level with, like the flute or trumpet? I'm trying to get as much information as I can before committing because I know I will likely have to pay for some lessons and probably instrument hire. Any other advice would be great. Thanks.
