Sorry if this is the wrong subreddit for this question. I've been scrolling through most of the music related reddits, and here seems to be the best suited. Sorry if this is long:
So, birthday coming up in December, and I wanted to get an instrument that I could fiddle around with in my free time. I'm a college student who lives in the dorms, so I'm looking for something that:
- is easy to carry and travel around with
*something preferably small
- doesn't sounds absolutely terrible sounding at first (I'm really self concious, I'll always have the fear that I'll be heard through my dorm)
I was considering the violin, the piano/keyboard, or an ocarina (or a flute).
More leaning on the violin or keyboard since I've already dabbled in those and I like their sounds. But the ocarina can be so small and lightweight that I could play that almost anywhere! Same with the flute. Only thing is that I've never practiced a wind instrument before, so that aspect both intrigues and scares me.
I'm willing to let go of my fears if there's no other instrument that would suit my preferences.
If it matters, I already have some type of musical background as I've learned the piano since I was 6 up until I was in high school. I was also in choir for basically all of grade school, and I've also dabbled in the violin for like 2 years. So basically I know the basics of music theory, the scales, the logistics, etc, and I hopefully don't need to start from scratch.
Again, if this isn't the right place I am so sorry.
