Hey, I'm mostly self-taught on guitar but have so far kept progressions within the same key. However, recently I was strumming idly and happened upon this progression (all using open-voiced chords on guitar):
A Asus2 A7 D Dm Amaj7 AMaj7Sus2 (and/or E or E7)
A7-D and E7-A make sense to me. Those are perfect cadences. However, from D-Dm it almost feels like there's a compulsion to move to Amaj7, but I don't understand the theory behind why (or what the theory is behind a IV-iv cadence). For background, my formal grasp of chord progressions is fairly limited simple variations on I-IV-V, so I suspect this is just a limit of my formal knowledge of progressions.
So any input on the theory behind this progression or resources to further my understanding of progressions would be appreciated.
