I need help figuring out a lick that's been driving me crazy for over a year and would also like to learn more about ear training techniques because apparently, I suck hard at this aspect of music even after over a year of exploring various training tools (mostly apps).
The lick that started it all is from Mayer's version of Ain't No Sunshine, he plays it on several occasions when he switches to the E-shaped D minor barred on the 10th fret (the same lick is repeated on the C in most versions of the song, a lot of it is improvised but the Crossroads one definitely has it). It's hard to see clearly on most concert footage but as posting links to YT tutorials and songs is against the rules here, the best I can do is say that the only one that clearly features it is from a user called Thomas Gilbert and starts immediately after 4:05. The thing is, he just breezes over it and links to a tab saying the following:
E|-10----| -8----|
B|-10-13- |-8-11-|
G|-10-12- |-8-11-|
D|-10-12- |-8-11-|
A|-10-12- |-8-11-|
E|-10---- |-8----|
The left row is supposed to be the D version, the right one is for the C bar. The thing is, it just doesn't add up lol, not even when experimenting with double stops at super-fast speeds. The only thing I'm positive I'm hearing is some crazy legato.
So, while I would very much like to put this very specific issue to rest once and for all, I'm also looking for advice on how to approach ear training and whether there's anything besides experience that could help me deal with super-fast playing such as this one.
