I asked this question to an employee at a guitar shop, and he suggested I check out Korg Volcas. I'm not at all opposed to working with synths and sequencers, and the Volca FM is almost affordable, but after doing some research I feel like even that might be too complicated for me. I'm sure I could fiddle with it and eventually get the hang of it, but it still seems daunting. I guess the point I'm trying to make is that when you don't know anything about playing music at all and you don't have access to a bunch of equipment you can borrow, any sort of instrument seems like a big investment that likely won't pay off. I like the idea of the Volca FM, which is a sort of tiny synthesizer/sequencer hybrid, but ultimately I don't think I'll know what I really like until I get going with something, and the barrier to entry for any instrument seems really high.
