In this series, I'll be going over everything you need to know about chords: how to build them, where they come from, how they interact with one another, how to hear them, etc. This is the basic curriculum I use with my private students. This series is an expansion of a free ebook of the same name, available on my website (go to http://www.billgrahammusic.com/teaching and scroll down until you find it.)
In this episode, we learn about The Circle Of Fifths, and how the orders of sharps and flats are extracted from the circle. We also work on playing the major scales, and identifying, playing, and singing all of the intervals inside of the major scale against a drone of the root and 5th (built up with several layers of a Behringer Model D synthesizer and samples of a Yamaha YC30). We then take that knowledge and use it to improvise some simple melodies over a drone on voice, piano, guitar, and cornet.
When working on singing in this context, don't worry too much about the quality of your voice, or stress out about singing perfectly in tune. The point of singing in this context is to work on connecting your ear to your hands.
Next time on Accelerated Intro To Harmony, we'll be talking about Major Triads, and some exercises to play and voice lead them around the circle of 5ths.
If this material is too basic for you, don't worry, I have more videos from my "Genius Of" Analysis series, "Chord Tone Improvisation" series, and "Barry Harris" series coming very soon. If this material is at just the right level for you, great, I have many more of these AITH coming soon too.
