I've started to get into composing for film, using a lot of Kontakt based orchestral virtual instruments. Some of them are great but they seem to take up a lot of power, especially with their in-built legato and all that jazz.
I've managed on my old laptop with 6GB RAM for some time, but with these new instruments, as soon as I've got about five or six tracks being fairly active at the same time, the computer freaks out and certain tracks start to glitch or cut out. I presume (hope!!!) this is a symptom of my lack of RAM.
I'm looking to upgrade my laptop, and am worried that 8GB won't be enough to give me plenty of freedom and breathing room when composing for orchestra. Am I right in thinking this? Will 16GB be enough? Or will I even need to shoot for 32GB...!
I don't plan on using hundreds of tracks at this stage..! Im still learning my craft. Though maybe 30 or 40 tracks at a time would be cool! It would be nice to be able to be creatively more free than I am now, and to have some processing breathing space when writing more complex tracks.
I'm not tech savvy so I don't know if 8 or 16GB will be enough. Also, if anyone has any 'budget' recommendations for laptops of this kind I'd love to know. I'm not a pro - I'm still learning my craft. Thanks!
