I tried learning keyboards some time ago, and really didn't get further than being able to play some simple tunes. I seem to recall two major issues:
-
the book I was using seemed 'jumpy'- it went in three fairly short chapters from simple chords and right hand tunes to playing 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring' which was a major jump to me. It also seemed to be far more focused on synths and electronic music production which isn't something I want to do.
-
my keyboard was, quite frankly, rubbish. I know that part of it was probably down to my playing, but the sound of this keyboard wasn't great which served to be discouraging in itself, and the feel of the keys also felt awful, especially as at the time I had access to a proper piano which I also used for practice as well.
I've since taken up the piano accordion which I'm hoping might make an attempt to play keyboards a little more successful, as certainly for the right hand a lot of what I'm doing is the same as an actual piano anyway. Ideally I need:
-
a keyboard method which is easy to use for self-teaching and which takes things gradually. I'm not particularly interested in doing electronic music or going down the whole synths route, just being able to play well.
-
a keyboard which isn't terrible. I'm not overly bothered about weighted keys or anything too fancy, just a good decent keyboard which sounds OK. I'm open to any and all suggestions.
Any advice is appreciated.
