This question may be trivial but I'm still learning and a novice in this field so I hope you can help me out.
To make it short: what loudness level are you targeting during your mixing process and later in the mastering with streaming in mind? The question is not about a proper gain staging process of individual instruments but the overall loudness level.
I'm aware that meters should be under 0 dB and one should keep a headroom of -6 dBFS. But does that mean that you aim at a final target loudness of -6 dBFS?
The point is, there is the LUFS system - and Spotify for example has dropped their target loudness to -14 LUFS.
So when I want to master for Spotify, does this mean that I should keep my levels during mixing at around -20 LUFS to have some headroom? And push the final master with a limiter up to -14 LUFS (or -16 to -13.9)?
And if that's the case, what is your workflow during mixing: do you keep all levels at around -20 LUFS via a LUFS meter or do you use a VU meter which is calibrated at -20 dBFS? Or even your stock peak meters bouncing around at -20 dBFS?
I hope this question is not too basic. Thanks in advance!
