Hello all. I have a fairly open topic I would like to pick the community's brains about. I have two things I want to ask about:
- Sound Design - Approach and thoughts
I am interested in what goes on your mind when you are designing sounds. Do you have a standard workflow? Do you do things randomly? Do you generate sounds and then write? Do you create patches for specific reasons?
My perspective as someone newish to design. I have two main work flows. One is purpose based, the other is general exploration.
If I need a patch for a specific project, then I will use a synth I am familiar with and write with more "rules" in mind. I try to make the process as quick and effective as possible, and I also tend to do it with the rest of the music playing. I find it very interesting how a patch can sound totally different in the context of the mix and isolated. It has really helped with my mixing and mastering of metal/hard rock.
When I am in synth exploration mode, I tend to take my time and follow the 'natural' flow of the synth. I normally pick one kind aspect of the synth I want to use and make sure to use it. I also sometimes impose limits on myself - like no unison, or only use one oscillator etc. I find this forces me to get to know the rest of the synth better. Like discovering that I could use the LFO as a kind of basic step sequencer when I banned myself from using the actual step sequencer. After that I could layer both and get some interesting textures.
While it's probably better to stick to as few synths as possible in order to learn sound design, I find it very interesting just how different the filters are in different synths. For example, I find the ones in Massive to be pretty extreme in comparison with, say, Hybrid3.
I am aware that my approach is severely lacking in the studying of presets. However, at this point, I am playing with synths more than using them for work, so I am really enjoying it being 'my' adventure. Man, I can literally explore and tinker with Diva all night.
- Potential questions for sound designers about sound design
If you could ask a professional-level sound designer 3-5 questions. What would they be?
This sounds a bit weird, but I think that I am so new to this that I'm not even asking the right questions.
So I'm interested what experienced sound designers want to know from professional sound designers if they got a chance for direct communication.
Cheers, and keep on rocking :)
