I'm very interested in learning either viola or piano. 4 years ago I was a percussionist in high school, but don't really plan on hitting drums and marimbas again. My plan was to buy an electric viola and learn independently, with 1 or 2 instructor lessons (30 minutes each) a month. This is for personal satisfaction, not to join an orchestra. I am much more interested in viola because of its size, sound, and portability.
The reason I choose an electric viola is because I work night shift and do not wish to wake my neighbors at 3am. I'm also not sure that very many electric violas are in a "student" price range. Another concern is that not much music has been written for solo viola to slowly step up in skill levels, as compared to piano. I would very much like to believe that I will progress mostly self-taught, but many people tell me that piano would end up being better. Any opinions?
