Hey guys, I was interested in how people 'fill space' in their projects to make things more interesting and keep a good flow of movement between instruments/sounds without adding unnecessary elements and over-producing the fuck out of everything.
Some of my favorites that I've picked up recently include:
1 - Layering fully dry elements with similar complimentary elements, fattening them up and adding light reverb and maybe even an aural exciter or similar effect to accentuate the high end (particularly on percussive elements like hats/rides)
2 - White Noise / Spot Sounds
Yeah, I know plenty of people overuse white noise but, like they say, everything in moderation. Use low-volume white noise as an ambient effect to fill space, or as a 'response' to elements, creating a kind of 'call & answer' effect where elements in the beat oscillate back and forth and groove with the more prominent sounds (kick, snare, bass, vox) and push the beat forward
Spot sounds are good for keeping relatively static sections (in terms of arrangement) interesting and can be almost anything (foley, vox chops, you name it). Make sure to use elements like risers and downlifters with purpose instead of just throwing a random sample in and calling it a session.
3 - Using plugins like iZotope Vinyl to add noise elements such as dust or wear
This could be a creative choice or a mixing choice, but regardless these types of plugins are invaluable for filling space and giving tracks a nice vibe, especially iZotope Vinyl (I love free stuff)
Let me know what your favorite tips are for filling space.
