Hello,
I am a musician and I normally do other genres. However as of late I am really getting back into synthesis and sound design, and having a huge amount of fun.
I have some questions I would like to put forward to more experienced producers of this genre:
- Synth Choice/Sound design
I bought one random synth on a whim - Hybrid3 by Air. Also it was $10 or something.
I have the demo versions of Diva and Sylenth1 and I think both of them are really fantastic.
However, as I am studying synthesis, I'm wondering if synth choice actually matters?
I am using Synth1, TyrellN6, Charlatan and Hybrid3 to learn. I like charlatan in particular because it has ZERO presets. Every sound I want I have to build myself. I find that very gratifying.
So my question is, for high-end synths, does the choice really matter much? At this moment I feel that if your synthesis and sound design skills/experience are high enough you can basically use any synth and get great results.
Right now, I choose a synth and then force myself to use the same synth to get all elements of the track I'm working on.
Is there a specific time that you would prefer one synth over another one? Is my approach conducive to learning sound design or am I shooting myself in the foot?
I'm not sure I have the right approach to get high-level drums. For other productions I use Kontakt libraries and Superior Drummer for drums. Where possible, I prefer real drums.
How does it work for electronic music? Are there preferred hardware or VSTs? Or do I have to improve my sample game.
Currently, I use samplers to blend together samples I can find. I am getting results that are usable, but I am rarely 'Yes, this is what I want. This inspires me.' which happens a lot when I write percussion in other genres.
I appreciate experience is necessary, I just want to make sure that I'm not missing anything huge.
The simplest choice is of course VSTs, and there are some amazing ones out there.
However, as a guitarist, I very much like the hands on approach. It can be a bit demotivational squinting at a tiny VST UI trying to get the right amount of cents with a mouse when I detune something.
My rig currently also supports the use of rack gear. I have an old E-mu controller which I should be able to use.
I was thinking about a Novation Bass Station or something like that.
I would love something like the Juno or Jupiter in rack form (1U), however, I guess that if they exist their price will be well over $1000.
As I am learning, I was wondering if anyone might suggest any synth hardware that I can use my hands on.
Not so interested in ROMplers (but I do like them).
Thank you, if anyone replies. And if not - you keep on rocking all the same.
