Hello all. First of all I apologize if this is not the right place. I'm not familiar with this sub so if this goes against any rules, feel free to delete it mods.
Now then! So I'm feeling pretty frustrated. I bought an HP ZBook 15 with the following specs:
Intel Core i7 4800MQ (2.7GHz up to 3.7GHz turbo)
32GB DDR3 Ram
256GB SSD Drive (plus an external HDD for storage)
I downloaded my copy of Ableton, excited to see just how well it will outperform any computer I've seen in my life, only to be utterly disappointed. So there's this test meant to put your CPU to it's limits, my brother calls it the "Serum test" (because it mainly uses the VST Serum). It's basically creating an extremely overwhelming (and very unpleasant) patch on said synthesizer. The patch will use just around all of Serum's power (Serum is a heavy VST on it's own) and then next you write a one-note midi for it and start duplicating the instrument/track until the system starts crackling and glitching. My brother tried it on his 2016 Macbook Pro (i7 6700HQ 2.6GHz, 16GB RAM) and he was able to reach 33 instances of Serum, while I was only able to get 27 on charger. The difference isn't huge of course, but I don't get it. For the specs, shouldn't it perform better? Am I misunderstanding something?
Of course this test is not practical at all, as I can't see myself (or anyone sane haha..) Using such a patch and many instances of it like that, but it's just strange my brother's laptop outperformed mine. I intend to test it for real and work on music to truly see it in action. If I'm misunderstanding something, please help me out.
Also some things I noticed (perhaps they could be contributing to the issue), my laptop is originally Windows 8 but it came without an OS, so I installed Windows 10 on it. Just on booting it, I notice it has 130-139 processes open (task manager), is this normal?
Plesse point out any flaws in my understanding of things if you notice any. Thanks!
