I take samples from tracks by Danny Elfman. Some of his stuff is amazing, and inspired me to purchase the East West bundle. I sample his Batman stuff for "grime" (a UK genre geared towards tracks for MC's/rappers).
I'm having issues mixing the samples from his tracks into my music. They're mostly low end heavy. This is a problem as "grime" is mostly bass heavy, with a very dissonant feel. The "tension" feel of the samples helps to create an atmosphere in the music I create. Something dark, or evil.
Anyway, I acquired the FLAC versions of his tracks but they're so hard to mix.
Here is the sample I played back from chops (already cut any low end off beyond around 120): https://clyp.it/5yydiacp
But mixing into bass heavy music is having issues, like here (this is the first drop, no intro): https://clyp.it/lx4aivng ... right now it sounds horrible.
There's no impact. The sample at the moment doesn't do anything for what I'm trying to do. Cutting off too much low end kills the sample. Too much low end makes everything muddy. I'd ideally like the sample to sit just under the bass and have a prominent roll in the track. At the moment it sounds flat and dead.
Does anyone have any advice on mixing these sorts of samples? I don't expect anyone to appreciate the genre I work in, but for self improvement I'd love to know what I'm doing wrong.
