Anyone have any idea why no matter how big UKG used to be, how many artists it influenced and how many subsequent offshoot genres it spawned, how come it seems like nobody remembers it at all? Used to be such a giant scene, literally overtook the U.K. electronic scene late 90's-2001 or so.
Personally, I'm taken aback by the dark garage offshoot started by Burial and continuing into modern artists like Asiah, Sorrow, Vacant etc.
But even the classic El-B stuff, Wookie, Bump n' Flex, etc. seems to be completely forgotten.
Disclosure brought some international attention to the style again for a little while, but even then, nobody thought to look back to the roots and everyone did one or two Disclosure ripoff tracks and then went back to whatever they were doing before. It really sucks; some of these tunes mean the world to me, and many other people, but Garage is quite dead. Untimely, I might add.
If you're interested, I'll post some links here for the following tunes to get a quick introduction to the sound:
Ghost - The Club El-B - Show A Little Love Bump n' Flex - R U Sleeping Wookie - Battles Burial - Untrue Burial/Four Tet/Thom Yorke - Mirror Sorrow - Raindancer Shura - Touch (Sorrow Remix)
Quite an evolution of style! Thoughts?
